About Christchurch

Christchurch (Māori: Ōtautahi) is the biggest city of the South Island and New Zealand's second-largest city when counted by the population of its urban area. It stands in the Canterbury Region, close to the middle of the island's east coast, on the eastern side of the Canterbury Plains, with the Pacific Ocean to the east and Banks Peninsula, an ancient volcanic complex, to the south. Through the city center runs the Avon River / Ōtākaro, lined by a large urban park. British settlers arrived in the mid-nineteenth century, and letters patent of July 31, 1856 made Christchurch a city, officially New Zealand's oldest established one.

Christchurch is often seen as an English city, and its nickname, the "Garden City," comes from resemblances to garden cities in England. People describe its architecture as distinctly English, with a few notable Gothic Revival buildings. The Christchurch movement of architecture, from the late 1950s, features New Brutalist elements and practical minimalist interiors. Humbler structures, such as utility buildings, pump houses and substations on suburban streets, record the city's social history. Earthquakes began in September 2010, and on February 22, 2011 many buildings in the central city collapsed.
