About Ghent

Ghent serves as capital of East Flanders, a province in the Flemish Region of Belgium, and is its largest city, as well as a port and university city. It began as a settlement where the Scheldt and Leie rivers meet. By 1300 Ghent was among the largest and richest cities in northern Europe, home to some 50,000 people, and by the 13th century it was Europe's leading woolen cloth manufacturing center. After the late 16th century the city lost importance, which left an extremely well-preserved historic center and made it a popular tourist destination. The municipality counted 270,473 people at the close of 2024.

Much of Ghent's medieval architecture has survived intact, and the city center is car-free. The belfry and the towers of St. Nicholas' Church and St. Bavo's Cathedral recall its 13th-century skyline, when only Paris was larger among Europe's cities north of the Alps. The Gravensteen castle and the buildings along the old Graslei harbor are among the highlights. In the 19th century its most famous architect, Louis Roelandt, designed the university hall Aula, the main courthouse and the opera house, and Henry Van de Velde designed the university's Boekentoren. Sint-Pieters station was finished in 1912 ahead of the 1913 world exhibition.
