About Brussels

Brussels is a Belgian region made up of 19 municipalities, among them the City of Brussels, Belgium's capital. It sits in the middle of the country, as an enclave inside the Flemish Region, with the Walloon Region a little under 4 km (2.5 mi) away to the south. A small rural settlement on the Senne river grew into an important city-region in Europe. In the years since the Second World War, it has become a major center of international politics. It is the EU's de facto capital, home to several principal EU institutions, and NATO's headquarters are there too.

The architecture is diverse: Gothic, Baroque and Louis XIV styles clash on the Grand-Place, a World Heritage Site of UNESCO since 1998, while the EU institutions occupy postmodern buildings. Little medieval architecture is preserved. Henry Van de Velde, Paul Hankar and Victor Horta designed notable Art Nouveau buildings, and Horta's major town houses have been UNESCO-listed since 2000. Joseph Poelaert designed the eclectic Palace of Justice (1883), which has a reputation as the largest building put up in the 19th century. The 103 m (338 ft) Atomium dates from the 1958 World's Fair.
