About San José

San José is Costa Rica's capital and largest city, and also the capital of San José Province. The city lies at the heart of the country, in the western middle of the Central Valley, and is the seat of national government and a hub for politics, the economy and transportation. The city is also one of the country's cantons, with a municipal land area of 44.62 square kilometers and an estimated 352,381 residents in 2022. Together with Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago and other cantons, it forms the Greater Metropolitan Area, estimated to exceed 2 million people in 2017.

Cabildo de León ordered the founding of San José in 1736, and its population rose during the 18th century through colonial planning. It has been the national capital three times, and over a million people travel through it daily. Within the city are La Sabana Metropolitan Park, the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica and the National Theater of Costa Rica. In 2016 San José became part of UNESCO's learning-cities network, and UNESCO also recognizes it as a "Design City."
