About Miami

Miami lies on the coast in the southeast of Florida and is Miami-Dade County's seat. With 442,241 residents at the 2020 census, it is Florida's second-most populous city proper. The city takes its name from the Miami River, which came from Mayaimi, the historic name both of Lake Okeechobee and of the Native Americans living around it. Julia Tuttle, a local citrus grower, first owned the land where Miami was built, and she later persuaded the railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to bring his Florida East Coast Railway into the area. Miami was incorporated on July 28, 1896, with just over 300 people.

Over 300 high-rises give Miami the third-largest skyline in the country, and 70 of them rise above 150 m (492 ft). Downtown Miami has a large concentration of international banks, one of the largest in the U.S., and the Health District includes Jackson Memorial Hospital, which has 1,547 beds and is the nation's largest hospital. PortMiami ranks first among cruise ports worldwide in passenger traffic and cruise lines. Development grew in the 1920s as northerners moved to the city, then slowed when the Florida land boom collapsed and the 1926 hurricane and the Great Depression followed. By 1940 the city had 172,172 residents.
