About New Orleans

New Orleans is a consolidated city-parish on the Mississippi River in Louisiana, coextensive with Orleans Parish. No other city in Louisiana has more people, and it is a major port and a commercial center for the Gulf Coast region. French colonists founded it in 1718, and it once served as the territorial capital of French Louisiana, until the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 made it part of the United States. Its high rainfall, low elevation and poor natural drainage have long made it vulnerable to flooding, and state and federal authorities have installed levees and drainage pumps to protect it.

The French Quarter, the city's historic heart, is noted for French and Spanish Creole architecture, with Creole cottages and townhouses that have large courtyards and intricate iron balconies. Housing styles include shotgun houses and bungalows, and St. Charles Avenue is famed for large antebellum homes in styles such as Greek Revival, Queen Anne and Italianate. For much of its history the skyline stayed low- and mid-rise, with doubts about whether soft, subsidence-prone soils could support high rises. The World Trade Center New Orleans, together with Plaza Tower, showed that skyscrapers were viable during the 1960s, and One Shell Square became the tallest building in 1972.
