About the Cradle of Aviation Museum Hangars
Uniondale, New York, in a part called East Garden City, is where the Cradle of Aviation Museum, an aerospace museum, commemorates what Long Island contributed to aviation. The ground belonged to Mitchel Air Force Base. That base, Roosevelt Field nearby and other fields on the Hempstead Plains hosted many historic flights, and by the mid-1920s the cluster was already called the Cradle of Aviation, which is where the museum's name comes from.
Nassau County took over Mitchel Air Force Base after it closed in 1961. The museum's founders collected aircraft meant for hangars 3 and 4 of the base; the first, a Curtiss JN-4D dating from World War I, was found by George C. Dade, the first director, in an Iowa pig barn in 1973. In 1980 the museum opened with a few aircraft in the unrestored hangars, and a major renovation and expansion in the late 1990s led to a state-of-the-art reopening in 2002.
More than 70 aircraft and scale models fill eight chronological galleries, covering pioneer aircraft, warbirds, jets and spacecraft. LM-13, an Apollo Lunar Module that was never used, had been slated to land on the Moon during the Apollo 19 mission, which was cancelled. The Nassau County Firefighter's Museum, with its education center, is housed in the same building, and a statue of Sally Ride stands outside.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 6 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 8 mm | 1:3,000 |
| 256 mm | 10 mm | 1:2,344 |

- Long ridged hangar roofs
- The gabled roofs carry many fine parallel ridges. At this low, wide size, layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the ridges crisp, and a larger print keeps more of them.
- Round drum and patterned block
- A round drum rises between the hangars, next to a block with a dotted pattern. Print friendly adapts that fine pattern to the print scale; Full detail keeps it.
- One piece with the ground
- The Cradle of Aviation Museum Hangars is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Cradle of Aviation Museum Hangars takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
