About New York

No U.S. city has more residents than New York. It lies at the southern end of New York State on a harbor that ranks among the largest natural harbors in the world, and it has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, along with the Bronx and Staten Island. By about 1624 Dutch colonists had set up Fort Amsterdam on the island as a trade center. In 1626 the settlement took the name New Amsterdam, and in 1653 it received a city charter; the English took control in 1664, and the name New York became permanent in 1674. The modern city dates from the consolidation of 1898.

Buildings in New York span many styles and periods. Brooklyn's Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House, built in the Dutch Colonial style, has a section dating to 1656, while One World Trade Center at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan cost more to build than any other office tower in the world. Only Hong Kong and Seoul had more high-rise buildings than New York's 6,455 in 2019. Brownstone rowhouses, townhouses and tenements built from 1870 to 1930 shape its large residential districts, and stone and brick became the preferred materials once wood-frame houses were limited after the Great Fire of 1835.
