About Esplanade ? Theatres on the Bay

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay serves Singapore as a center for the performing arts, in the Downtown Core, close to the mouth of the Singapore River. It takes its name from the nearby Esplanade Park and is nicknamed "The Durian". Two rounded structures make up the complex: one holds a concert hall seating about 1,600, and the other holds a theater for about 2,000. The concert hall's pipe organ has 4,740 pipes and 61 stops, and Johannes Klais Orgelbau designed and built it.

Two firms worked together on the design: DP Architects, based in Singapore, and Michael Wilford & Partners of London, which dropped out in May 1995. The building has two rounded space frames carrying triangulated glass elements and sunshades, balancing views outward against shade from the sun. Over 7,000 triangular aluminum sunshades cover the two circular glass shells and look somewhat like spikes on the halves of a durian. The architects said the shape was not meant to be a fruit; it came from what they found the most interesting way to do sunshades.

Planning began in 1992, and the project cost about SGD 600 million. Work officially began on August 11, 1996, on ground once occupied by the Satay Club. The center was completed in February 2001 and officially opened on October 12, 2002, by S. R. Nathan, who was President of Singapore at the time. The 117th IOC Session had its opening ceremony there on July 5, 2005.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 14 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 17 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 22 mm 1:2,344

Lattice-covered shells
Both domes are covered by a triangular lattice of thin ribs. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; Full detail keeps every rib, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
Slender posts under the rims
Thin posts carry the lower rims of the domes. Printing slowly and using layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm helps these slim parts come out clean.
One piece with the ground
Esplanade ? Theatres on the Bay is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Esplanade ? Theatres on the Bay takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
