About the Grand Choral Synagogue (Saint Petersburg)

At 2 Lermontovskii Avenue stands the Grand Choral Synagogue, home to an Orthodox Jewish congregation and described as the third-largest synagogue in Europe. It goes by the Great Choral Synagogue as well, and since 2000 it has carried the name of Edmond J. Safra. Its design blends Moorish Revival and Byzantine Revival styles. Work finished in 1888, and the building was consecrated in December 1893.

Tsar Alexander II gave permission on September 1, 1869, after a request from the philanthropist Joseph Günzburg and Samuel Polyakov, first head of the St. Petersburg Jewish Community. A plot of land was purchased for 65,000 rubles in 1879. The height was capped at 47 m (154 ft), against the 65 m (213 ft) the architects had proposed. Aleksei Malov supervised construction between 1880 and 1888.

In the First World War, the premises held a 100-bed hospital for wounded people of all religions. The synagogue was bombed between 1941 and 1943 while Leningrad was under siege, yet the hospital stayed in operation. Following a US$5 million gift from the Safra family in 1999, the building was reconstructed. The Great Hall reopened on June 26, 2001; it holds 1,200 worshipers, with women's galleries along three sides.
