About the Gulfport Army Air Field Hangar

Known also as the FBO Hangar and the Gulfport Municipal Airport Terminal, the Gulfport Army Air Field Hangar dates from 1944-45, when it was built to train crews for combat flying on the B-29 Superfortress. In 2011 it gained a place on the National Register of Historic Places, and it became a Mississippi Landmark in 2012, and it is in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Gulfport Army Air Field was built in 1942 as a training facility for heavy bomber units, such as the B-17. The War Department expanded the field in 1944 and started this hangar, sized for the larger B-29. The hangar is concrete and steel, with a large vaulted roof and one-story lean-to additions along its east and west sides. Its length is about 200 feet (61 m), running north to south, and its width 80 feet (24 m).

Two-inch gypsum planks cover the roof, sealed with bitumen, and doors of sliding wood sheathed in sheet metal give access. In 1949 the City of Gulfport received the field after the war, and the western lean-to served from about 1947 to 1963 as the airport's passenger terminal. Hurricane Katrina heavily damaged the hangar in August 2005; restoration ran from 2015 to May 2016, and on May 26, 2016 the hangar was transferred to the Mississippi National Guard.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale

200 mm 6 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 8 mm 1:2,344

A vaulted roof with lean-tos
The curved roof is flanked by low lean-to sides along its length. A layer height of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keeps the curve smooth, and a larger print keeps the planking lines.
Small end details
Small annexes and corner posts sit at the ends. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; Full detail keeps them on a larger print.
One piece with the ground
The Gulfport Army Air Field Hangar is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Gulfport Army Air Field Hangar takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
