About the Holy Cross Church, Warsaw
The Church of the Holy Cross, or Bazylika Świętego Krzyża in Polish, is a Roman Catholic church on Krakowskie Przedmieście in central Warsaw, Poland, facing the main campus of Warsaw University. Among the Baroque churches of the Polish capital it is counted as one of the most notable ones. Inside, the embalmed heart of the composer Frédéric Chopin is kept in an urn that was immured in a pillar in 1882. Some decades later an urn holding Władysław Reymont's heart was added too.
A small wooden Holy Cross chapel stood on the site as early as the 15th century. The present main building went up between 1679 and 1696, designed mainly by Józef Szymon Bellotti, who served as royal architect. Its financing came from abbot Kazimierz Szczuka and from Michał Stefan Radziejowski, Primate of Poland. Its two towers were at first square-cut, and between 1725 and 1737 they received headpieces in late Baroque style by Józef Fontana.
The church suffered severe damage in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. On September 6, 1944, German forces set off two large Goliath tracked mines inside, which destroyed the facade, and in January 1945 they blew up what remained. Between 1945 and 1953 B. Zborowski rebuilt the church in a simplified form, without the Baroque polychromes and frescos in the interior. Reconstruction of the main altar took place between 1960 and 1972.
