About Warsaw

Warsaw is Poland's capital and most populous city, on the Vistula in east-central Poland. An official estimate puts the population at 1.87 million, and the metropolitan area has around 3.5 million residents. The city covers 517 square kilometers and has 18 districts. It grew from a small fishing town; in 1413 it became the Duchy of Masovia's seat. In 1596 Sigismund III decided to move the capital of Poland, along with his court, from Kraków, and the city rose to prominence. In 1939, as World War II began, the city came under bombing and siege, and much of the historic city was later destroyed.

Unlike most Polish cities, Warsaw is dominated by contemporary architecture, but older built heritage survives in the Old Town and in the central district's southern part. The Old Town, reconstructed after World War II, represents nearly every European architectural style and UNESCO placed it on its World Heritage list in 1980. The Royal Castle (1596–1619) is a notable example of Mannerism, and Neoclassicism dominated the cityscape throughout the 19th century. Post-war architecture includes a Stalinist skyscraper, the Palace of Culture and Science, patterned on the Empire State Building of New York. Varso Tower, by Norman Foster, is among the contemporary towers.
