About Hotel Congress

Hotel Congress, in downtown Tucson, Arizona, is a historic building recognized at the federal level. Built in 1918, it was designed by William and Alexander Curlett, a Los Angeles architectural firm, when Congress Street was being expanded, and it was planned together with the Rialto Theatre, north of the street. Its back faces the historic Amtrak Southern Pacific station that Southern Pacific built in 1907. The building holds a restaurant, a bar and a music venue as well as the hotel.

The Arizona Daily Star ran a naming competition in 1918 that produced the name The Congress Hotel, and the winner was revealed on April 30, 1918. The hotel is known as the site where the gang of John Dillinger, a gangster and bank robber, was captured in 1934. A fire began in the basement on January 22, 1934, and climbed up to the third floor, the level where the gang was living under aliases. The gang got out on aerial ladders, and two firemen who brought down their luggage at the gang's request revealed who they were.

The building joined the National Historic Register in 2003, and the hotel earned a Fodor's Choice distinction in 2006, then again in 2008. In 1985, a music venue opened in the hotel and became a regular stop for touring bands in Tucson. That venue, Club Congress, is regarded as having the longest run among comparable venues west of the Mississippi.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 4 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 5 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 6 mm 1:2,344

Rooftop sign lettering
The roof carries a sign with open letters on thin supports. Print friendly adapts it to the print scale; a larger print or Full detail keeps more of the letters.
Small building, small windows
The building is low and compact, with rows of small windows. A larger print size and 0.12–0.16 mm layers keep the windows crisp.
One piece with the ground
Hotel Congress is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Hotel Congress takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there a Hotel Congress STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Hotel Congress grows with the print: about 4 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
