About the Kazan Cathedral, Moscow
Kazan Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church at Red Square's northwest corner in Moscow. The present building reconstructs an earlier church that was demolished on Joseph Stalin's orders in 1936; that church had been considered one of Moscow's most important. Its formal dedication is to Our Lady of Kazan.
Prince Dmitry Pozharsky credited an icon of the Mother of God from Kazan with his recovery of Moscow in 1612. He paid for a wooden church on Red Square dedicated to the Virgin of Kazan, first recorded in 1625. After a fire destroyed it in 1632, Tsar Michael I had a brick church built; it was consecrated in October 1636 with a single dome, a wide gallery, a tented belfry, and several tiers of kokoshniki.
In 1929–1932 Peter Baranovsky supervised work that returned the exterior of the church to its original design, though some specialists have questioned its accuracy. The present building dates from a rebuilding in 1990–1993 that used photographs and detailed measurements of the earlier church. Open galleries surround the church on three sides and end at the hipped bell tower on the northwest corner.
