About the Ostankino Tower

The Ostankino Tower, in Moscow, Russia, is used for television and radio broadcasting and takes its name from the Ostankino district around it. It stands 540.1 meters (1,772 ft) tall and was designed by Nikolai Nikitin. It was the first free-standing structure taller than 500 m (1,600 ft), and it was built to mark 50 years since the October Revolution. The grand opening took place in 1967, though at first only part of the structure was operational, and everything else was finished by 1969.

Nikitin, an expert in structures of reinforced concrete and metal, proposed a reinforced concrete tower after the Kyiv Design Institute had offered an openwork metal design resembling the Eiffel Tower. He pointed to a similar project in Stuttgart that was completed in 1956. Underground, his tower had a base of only 4.6 meters, and colleagues who doubted its stability urged him to add 40-meter piles. The tower remained stable, and steel cables were installed inside the concrete frame.

Construction began in 1959, and an entire town was set up for the project. A self-lifting crane raised the trunk, while helicopters were used to install the antenna. Leonid Batalov and Dmitry Burdin shaped the appearance. Between 325 and 360 meters, a structure resembling a 10-story house holds equipment, a revolving restaurant over three floors and an observation deck. The glazed deck sits at 337 meters, with an open deck about 3 meters higher. The tower held the title of the world's tallest free-standing structure until the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, overtook it.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 145 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 181 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 232 mm 1:2,344

A very slender shaft
The tower is a long, thin shaft with a slim antenna above the pod. Print slowly with good cooling, and use layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm to keep the antenna tip crisp.
Flared base and pod
The base flares out into a ring of supports, and the pod has fine surface detail. Print friendly adapts these small features to your print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print.
One piece with the ground
The Ostankino Tower is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Ostankino Tower takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Ostankino Tower is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there an Ostankino Tower STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Ostankino Tower grows with the print: about 145 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
