About Moscow

Moscow is Russia's capital and its largest city. It stands along the Moskva River, in Central Russia, and is governed as a federal city. It is the world's northernmost and coldest megacity. More than 13 million people live within the city limits, which cover 2,511 km² (970 sq mi). The city was first documented in 1147 and became the capital city of the Grand Principality of Moscow, a state that took the lead in uniting the Russian lands in the 15th century. In 1712, during Peter the Great's reign, the Russian capital moved to Saint Petersburg, and it returned to Moscow in 1918. Moscow hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics.

The first Kremlin dates to the middle of the 12th century, and the medieval city followed a layout of concentric walls and intersecting radial thoroughfares. Italian architects built towers and some churches when the Kremlin was rebuilt in the 15th century. Repeated fires and the nobility's needs prompted a rebuilding in the 18th century's second half, which replaced much of the old wooden city with classical buildings. Stalin's plans brought broad avenues at the expense of historic buildings, and two cathedrals, among them Christ the Saviour, were destroyed and then rebuilt in the 1990s. The Seven Sisters, skyscrapers set at roughly equal distances from the Kremlin, shape the skyline.
