About the Kazan Cathedral, Saint Petersburg
The Kazan Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church on Nevsky Prospekt in Saint Petersburg, dedicated to Our Lady of Kazan, among the most venerated icons in Russia. Work began in 1801 with Alexander Sergeyevich Stroganov overseeing it, and took ten years; the church was completed in 1811, replacing an earlier church dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos. Andrey Voronikhin based the design on Rome's St. Peter's Basilica, and the building shows his Empire Style.
Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 changed the cathedral's purpose. Russians came to see it chiefly as a memorial to the victory over Napoleon, and General Mikhail Kutuzov was buried there in 1813. In 1815 the victorious army brought back keys from seventeen cities and eight fortresses, and these were placed in the sacristy. Two bronze statues of Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolly, designed by Boris Orlovsky, stand in front of the building.
Inside, the cathedral is 69 meters in length and 62 meters in height, with columns that echo the colonnade outside. The interior also holds numerous sculptures and icons by the leading Russian artists of the day. Its bronze doors are copies of the doors of the Baptistery in Florence. The building is listed as a federal cultural heritage site.
