About Kuwait City

Kuwait City is Kuwait's capital and largest city. It lies near the center of the country, along the southern shore of the Persian Gulf's Kuwait Bay, and serves as the emirate's political, cultural and economic hub. Most Kuwaiti corporations and the entire banking system are headquartered there. Roughly three million people lived in the metropolitan area in 2018, over 70% of the country's population, yet the city has no administrative status of its own. All six governorates contain parts of the urban agglomeration. In a narrower sense the name refers only to the historic core, in the Capital Governorate.

In the early to mid 1700s the city was only a small fishing village. Over the 1700s Kuwait gradually became a principal commercial center for goods moving among India, Muscat, Baghdad, Persia and Arabia, and it was the Persian Gulf region's boat-building center. A major public-works program began in 1950. The country's growing oil income attracted many foreign workers and helped finance a new master plan that the state approved in 1952. Kuwait University was established in 1966, and the National Assembly Building, designed from the works of Jørn Utzon, was completed in 1982.
