About the Loring Air Force Base Double Cantilever Hangar

The double-cantilever hangar at Loring Air Force Base, officially Building 8280, is the biggest structure at the former base that became the Loring Commerce Centre. It measures approximately 76 m by 180 m (250 feet by 600 feet), and its appurtenances take up 1.588 ha (3.925 acres). The hangar can hold five B-36 Peacemaker aircraft or six B-52 Stratofortress aircraft. Its main building dates from 1954 and cost $4.6 million.

Among the earliest hangars at the base, which had opened two years before, it let Strategic Air Command crews keep an aircraft in working condition if Soviet behavior ever warranted an attack, and it sheltered them from harsh Maine weather. Its double-cantilever design was among the first of its kind built for that command, answering a demand for roomier, more efficient space than the buildings from World War II that many other bases had inherited.

The foundation is 260 concrete caissons, each 24 inches (610 mm) across, sunk 7.6 m (25 feet) to limestone bedrock. Arched steel trusses reach out 29 m (95 feet) beyond the shop supports at the center, at both ends, which leaves maximum vertical clearance inside. Each of the north and south walls has six doors; fully open, they form an opening 91 m (300 feet) wide that fits a B-36's whole wingspan.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 6 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 8 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 10 mm 1:2,344

Long ribbed roof
The roof is one broad slab with evenly spaced ribs. A layer height of 0.12–0.16 mm keeps the ribs crisp, and a larger print size keeps them from blurring together.
Corner towers and big doors
Small towers sit at the corners and the long walls carry door lines. Print friendly adapts the thinnest parts; Full detail keeps every line on a large print.
One piece with the ground
The Loring Air Force Base Double Cantilever Hangar is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Loring Air Force Base Double Cantilever Hangar takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
