About Old St. Mary's Church Tempe

Located in Tempe, Arizona, at 230 East University Avenue, Old St. Mary's Church (originally Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church) was built in 1903. Father Severin Westhoff designed it in the Romanesque Revival style. No other church in the Phoenix metropolitan area has stood as long. It is the sole Romanesque Revival building around Tempe and one of a few across Arizona.

Until 1968 it was the Catholic parish church for Tempe; that year it became the home of the Arizona State University Newman Center, and it later housed Mary College at ASU, a Catholic Studies center. Its listing in the National Register of Historic Places dates from 1978. It stands in place of an 1881 adobe chapel that had started as a mission serving Mexican residents of San Pablo, a village at the foot of Hayden Butte.

Its bricks were fired from clay tinted by the red soil of Fort McDowell, and the foundation uses stone quarried at the butte's base. Two trained bricklayers came from Phoenix; everyone else on the building crew volunteered. The footprint is roughly 77 by 40 feet (23 by 12 meters), with a steep gabled roof and a bell tower, square in plan, topped by an octagonal steeple. Twelve tall arched stained glass windows light the building.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

A slender steeple and cross
The octagonal steeple tapers to a thin point with a small cross. Print slowly with good cooling, and use layers of 0.12 mm so the spire stays crisp; Print friendly adapts the cross on a small print.
Fine roof courses
The steep gabled roof carries many thin courses. A larger print or Full detail keeps them distinct.
One piece with the ground
Old St. Mary's Church Tempe is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Old St. Mary's Church Tempe takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
