About the Tempe Municipal Building

The Tempe Municipal Building is the city hall of Tempe, Arizona, and it takes the form of an inverted pyramid. Rolf Osland and Michael Goodwin, together with Kemper Goodwin, designed it, and it was built from 1969 to 1971. Michael Goodwin first proposed a big concrete building like Boston City Hall, and the city council rejected it. A second design, which stepped down the side of Tempe Butte, was rejected as well.

Goodwin then got the idea for an inverted pyramid in the shower, where he noticed light crossing a shower door at 45-degree angles. After a conversation with Rolf Osland, Osland drafted the formal design, and the Goodwin firm produced the plans in 1966. The shape also helps with climate control, keeping the interior cool through summer and warm through winter.

The ground floor holds only 188.1 m2 (2,025 sq ft) of reception space, the second floor 522.6 m2 (5,625 sq ft), and the third floor 930 m2 (10,000 sq ft). The council chambers sit in a semi-buried basement level, and free-standing fire stair towers flank the building. Ground was broken in 1969, and the Phoenix firm M. M. Sundt Construction Company was the contractor. It was finished in 1971, and the inauguration took place on October 2 that year.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 4 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 4 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 6 mm 1:2,344

An overhanging inverted shape
The building widens as it rises, so the upper floors and roof overhang the narrower base. A layer height of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keeps the sloped sides smooth, and a larger print size keeps more of their fine tiers.
Narrow free-standing side towers
Two narrow towers stand apart from the main building. Print friendly adapts thin edges to the print scale, while Full detail keeps them as modeled, which suits a larger print.
One piece with the ground
The Tempe Municipal Building is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Tempe Municipal Building takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Tempe Municipal Building is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Tempe Municipal Building STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Tempe Municipal Building grows with the print: about 4 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
