About Parliament Hill

Parliament Hill is Crown land lying along the south shore of the Ottawa River in downtown Ottawa, Ontario, and it houses the Parliament of Canada. It has a group of Gothic revival buildings whose features were selected to recall the history of parliamentary democracy. The grounds cover nine hectares (22 acres). The site was a military base during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Then Queen Victoria picked Ottawa as capital of the Province of Canada, and in 1859 work began to turn the hill into a government precinct.

Geologically the hill is a limestone outcrop whose top slopes gently, and beech and hemlock trees once formed a primeval forest on it. When the Department of Public Works called for design proposals in 1859, 298 drawings were submitted. Thomas Fuller and Chilion Jones won the contract for the Centre Block with a Victorian High Gothic scheme, while Thomas Stent and Augustus Laver were awarded the East and West Blocks. Gothic was thought to remind people of the old European history of parliamentary democracy, and to contrast with the republican neoclassical style used in Washington, D.C.

Ground was broken on December 20, 1859. The Centre Block's cornerstone was laid the following September 1, and the stone, Potsdam sandstone, was quarried at Nepean, 30 km away. A fire on February 3, 1916 destroyed the Centre Block. Eleven years on, the rebuilt block was finished, and the Peace Tower, a freestanding bell tower, was dedicated in memory of the Canadians who lost their lives in the First World War. In 1976 the Parliament Buildings and grounds were designated National Historic Sites of Canada.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 900 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 18 mm 1:5,625
200 mm 22 mm 1:4,500
256 mm 28 mm 1:3,516

A tall, slim central tower
The central building has a slender tower rising from its middle. Printing slowly and using layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm helps keep the tower straight and its top crisp.
Steep gables and small spires
Each building has many pointed gables and small spires. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; Full detail keeps more of them, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
One piece with the ground
Parliament Hill is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Parliament Hill takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

Parliament Hill is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Parliament Hill STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Parliament Hill grows with the print: about 18 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
