About Al-Khazneh (Petra)

Al-Khazneh, Arabic for The Treasury, is a tomb cut straight into a cliff at Petra, the ancient city of the Nabatean Kingdom. Its other name, Khaznat el-Far'oun, means the pharaoh's treasury, and it counts among the most elaborate of Petra's rock-cut tombs. Like most buildings in this ancient town, and like the Monastery (Ad Deir), it was cut from a sandstone cliff face. It is thought to have been a mausoleum and crypt that went up at the start of the 1st century AD, in Aretas IV Philopatris's reign.

The name goes back to legends about a decorative stone urn on the second level, which is actually solid sandstone. In the early 19th century the area's Bedouins began to call it Al-Khazneh, believing it contained treasures. One legend says the Egyptian Pharaoh, after he and part of his army got away as the Red Sea closed, made the Khazneh by magic to shelter his treasury while he went on pursuing Moses. Erosion over the two millennia since the carving has worn away many of its architectural details.

The figures are thought to be mythological ones tied to the afterlife: four eagles at the top that would carry souls away, dancing Amazons with double axes on the upper level, and, at either side of the entrance, statues of Castor and Pollux, who were twins. The interior is plain next to the elaborate facade, with a main chamber and three antechambers enclosing around 2,000 m³ (71,000 cu ft). In 2012 the non-profit Zamani Project spatially documented the Treasury as part of its 3D digital documentation of cultural heritage.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 13 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 16 mm 1:3,000

Slender columns and urn finial
A row of slender columns carries the pediments, and a small urn tops the facade. Print friendly adapts thin parts like these to your print scale; Full detail keeps them, best printed slowly with good cooling and 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
Small carved figures
Tiny figures and narrow ledges sit on the face of the cliff. A larger print keeps them easier to read.
One piece with the ground
Al-Khazneh (Petra) is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Al-Khazneh (Petra) takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
