About Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo
Bendigo, a provincial city in Victoria, is home to Sacred Heart Cathedral, the cathedral church for Roman Catholics of the Diocese of Sandhurst, where the Bishop of Sandhurst has his seat. Among Australian churches it is one of the largest, and only St Patrick's and St Paul's Cathedrals, both in Melbourne, are taller. Its entry in the Victorian Heritage Register is dated September 4, 1997.
Henry Backhaus (1811–1882), who came from Paderborn in Germany and was the earliest Catholic priest on the goldfields of Bendigo, left an estate that chiefly paid for the building. In 1895 Martin Crane, the diocese's first bishop, asked architects for competing designs, and William Tappin, of Reed, Barnes and Tappin, won. The Gothic Revival design was realized in sandstone from quarries around Geelong.
Bishop & Son of London built the large pipe organ, installed late in 1905. Following a long gap, work started again in 1954 and finished in 1977. The spire was built lighter than first designed, with a steel frame under a masonry veneer, and the later works were drawn up by Bates, Smart and McCutcheon, successor to Reed, Barnes and Tappin. The cathedral is 75 meters (246 ft) long, its ceiling is 24 meters (79 ft) high, and the main spire is 87 meters (285 ft) high.
