About St. Alexander's Church, Warsaw
St. Alexander's is a Roman Catholic church in central Warsaw, Poland, standing on Triple Cross Square. It sits close to the southern end of New World Street, also called Nowy Świat, and the Royal Route, and it ranks among Warsaw's most recognizable landmarks. Chrystian Piotr Aigner designed it in the neoclassical style on a circular plan topped by a dome, and it was built between 1818 and 1825. The Pantheon in Rome was his inspiration. The church commemorates Tsar Alexander I of Russia.
Between 1886 and 1895 the church was rebuilt in the Neo-Renaissance style to a design by Józef Pius Dziekoński, who won the contest for the project. The result was a much larger building with two towers and a higher dome. In early September 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising, German bombing hit the church with 9 bombs, bringing down the dome, one tower and the main nave. Between 1949 and 1952 it was rebuilt in a shape close to the simpler original.
