About St. John's Archcathedral, Warsaw
St. John's Archcathedral is a Catholic church in the Old Town precinct of Warsaw, standing on Świętojańska Street next to the Jesuit Church. Of the city's three major cathedrals it is the only one that also carries the title of archcathedral, and it serves as mother church for the Archdiocese of Warsaw. It is counted among Poland's national pantheons. UNESCO lists the church, together with the Old Town around it, as a World Heritage Site.
The church dates from the 14th century and was built in the Masovian Gothic style, and it served as a coronation and burial place for a number of Dukes of Masovia. In the late 16th century Queen Anna Jagiellon had an elevated corridor 80 meters long built to connect it with the Royal Castle; the link was extended in the 1620s after an attempt on King Sigismund III's life in front of the church. A new diocese took Warsaw as its seat in 1798, and the church became a cathedral.
During the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 the cathedral was fought over, and a tank loaded with explosives was driven inside; the explosion wrecked much of the building. Once the uprising had collapsed, the Germans drilled holes in the walls for charges and blew the church up, destroying 90% of its walls. The church was rebuilt once the war ended, and its exterior follows the presumed look of the 14th-century building, taken from an early-17th-century illustration and a 1627 drawing, rather than its prewar form, while the interior was returned to its raw Gothic look.
