About St. Nicholas Church, Berlin
St. Nicholas Church holds the title of Berlin's oldest church and stands in the eastern part of the central borough of Mitte. The streets and the River Spree around it bound the Nikolaiviertel, or Nicholas quarter, an area of restored medieval buildings that includes some recent imitations. Its construction is dated to 1220–1230, making it one of Berlin's oldest churches, alongside the Church of Our Lady near Alexanderplatz.
The church was Roman Catholic at first and became Lutheran in 1539, after the Reformation arrived in the Electorate of Brandenburg. During the 17th century the hymn writer Paul Gerhardt served as its minister and the composer Johann Crueger served as musical director; the theologian Philipp Jacob Spener was minister from 1691 to 1705.
Allied bombing in World War II destroyed the roof and the tops of the towers, and in 1949 the vaults and northern pillars collapsed. The ruins lay in East Berlin, and the German Democratic Republic rebuilt the church between 1980 and 1983 working from old drawings and plans during the Nikolaiviertel reconstruction for Berlin's 750th anniversary in 1987. Much of the building is therefore a reconstruction, used as a museum and concert venue with a set of 41 bells.
