About Strasbourg Cathedral

In Strasbourg, in Alsace, France, stands Strasbourg Cathedral, a Catholic cathedral also called Strasbourg Minster. Parts of it remain Romanesque, yet many regard it as one of the finest Rayonnant Gothic buildings. Erwin von Steinbach is credited with major contributions from 1277 until his death in 1318, and his son and a grandson followed him as chief architects. Ulrich Ensingen, then Johannes Hültz, built a single octagonal tower on the west facade's northern side, rather than the two spires first envisioned.

Construction started in 1015, was relaunched in 1190 and finished in 1439. At the heart of the Place de la Cathédrale, the cathedral reaches 142 m (466 ft). It was the tallest building in the world between 1647 and 1874, a span of 227 years, until St. Nikolai's Church in Hamburg surpassed it. It is also described as the tallest surviving structure to be built wholly within the Middle Ages. Its distinctive color comes from reddish-brown Vosges sandstone.

It can be spotted from a great distance over the Alsace plains, and from the Black Forest beyond the Rhine or the Vosges Mountains. Victor Hugo described it as a "gigantic and delicate marvel." Since at least 1224, the foundation known as Fondation de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame has overseen its construction and maintenance. Housed in the Foundation's own buildings, the municipal Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame shows original artworks from the cathedral, among them sculptures and stained glass, and the plans for the original building. UNESCO placed the cathedral on the World Heritage List in 1988, together with the historic center of the city, the Grande Île, for its outstanding Gothic architecture.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 38 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 48 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 61 mm 1:2,344

Open lattice spire
The tall spire is an open lattice of thin ribs. Print friendly adapts the thinnest ribs to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, for a large print or a fine nozzle. Print slowly with good cooling and use 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
Pinnacles and buttresses
Many small pinnacles and slim buttresses surround the tower and nave. A bigger print size keeps more of them, and printing slowly helps the tips form cleanly.
One piece with the ground
Strasbourg Cathedral is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Strasbourg Cathedral takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

Strasbourg Cathedral is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Strasbourg Cathedral STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Strasbourg Cathedral grows with the print: about 38 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
