About Chartres Cathedral

Chartres Cathedral, a Catholic cathedral, stands in the French city of Chartres, southwest of Paris at a distance of about 80 km (50 miles). The Bishop of Chartres has his seat there. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady, and was mostly built between 1194 and 1220. At least five cathedrals have occupied the site, each replacing a building damaged by war or fire. A major fire on the night of June 10, 1194 spared the crypt, as well as the towers and the new façade. Money for the rebuilding was raised from royal and noble patrons throughout Europe, along with small gifts from ordinary people.

Its architecture is both well known and influential, in the High Gothic and Classic Gothic styles, and it rests on earlier Romanesque basements. Heavy flying buttresses dominate the exterior, which let the architects make the windows much larger, and most of the original stained glass survives intact. Two contrasting spires stand at the west end: a plain pyramid 105 m high and a Flamboyant (late Gothic) spire 113 m (377 ft) high on an older tower. Lightning destroyed the north spire in 1506, and Jean Texier rebuilt it in the Flamboyant style between 1507 and 1513.

It has been a destination for travelers since at least the 12th century. Christian pilgrims come to venerate the Sancta Camisa, a relic said to be the tunic the Virgin Mary wore at Christ's birth. Henri IV of France was crowned there on February 27, 1594, in place of Reims, because the Catholic League occupied both Paris and Reims at the time. UNESCO named the cathedral a World Heritage Site in 1979.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale

200 mm 39 mm 1:3,000

Two slender west spires
The two west spires are tall and narrow, one plain and one ringed with small pinnacles. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the tips crisp, and printing slowly helps them.
Slim flying buttresses
Slim flying buttresses arch from the outer walls toward the roof. Print friendly adapts these thin parts to your print scale; a larger print or Full detail keeps more of them.
One piece with the ground
Chartres Cathedral is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Chartres Cathedral takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

Chartres Cathedral is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Chartres Cathedral STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Chartres Cathedral grows with the print: about 31 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
