About Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos
Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos is a stadium in the Engenho de Dentro neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio de Janeiro City Hall owns it, and Botafogo FR plays its home matches there. Football is its main use. It hosted the athletics events at the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, was built from 2003 to 2007, and was ready for the 2007 Pan American Games. It also served as one of five venues at the 2021 Copa América.
The ground is known as Nilton Santos or by the nickname Engenhão, which refers to its Engenho de Dentro location. Its former name was Estádio João Havelange, and in 2015 it became Estádio Nilton Santos, a name that honors Nílton Santos. He played his whole career at Botafogo and is counted among the best defenders the game has known, and he was named to the 20th Century World Team. The city then officially renamed the stadium Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos in February 2017, and its capacity was raised to 60,000 for the Games.
Construction cost R$380 million, or US$192 million, six times the original budget of R$60,000,000. It opened on June 30, 2007 with a Campeonato Brasileiro Série A match between Botafogo and Fluminense; 43,810 people attended and Botafogo won 2–1. After the Pan American Games, Botafogo signed a 20-year lease with the city.
