About Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, often just called Rio, is the capital of the state of the same name and Brazil's second-largest city, after São Paulo. It has about 6 million residents within the city itself and 13 million across its metropolitan area, in 2025. The Portuguese founded it in 1565 and named it São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro; Rio de Janeiro was originally the name of Guanabara Bay. Colonial administration moved from Salvador to Rio in 1763, and in 1808 the Portuguese royal family arrived there. The Empire of Brazil kept Rio as its capital until 1889, and republican Brazil did until 1960, when Brasília took over.

When the Portuguese court arrived in 1808, the city had no physical space or urban structure for the hundreds of noblemen who came, and many residents were forced from their homes. During the first decade, the city gained the Military Academy, the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, the National Library of Brazil and the Botanical Garden. Its attractions include about 80 kilometers of beaches, the Corcovado and Sugarloaf mountains, and the Sambódromo, a parade avenue lined with permanent grandstands that is used during Carnival. Maracanã Stadium hosted the 1950 and 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.
