About Basilique de Fourvière
Notre-Dame de Fourvière, a minor basilica, stands on Fourvière hill in Lyon, France, overlooking the city. It was built with private funds, and work began in 1872, with interior finishing touches continuing as late as 1964. The site had been the Roman forum of Trajan, known as the forum vetus (old forum), and the name Fourvière is a reversed, corrupted form of the French Vieux-Forum.
Pierre Bossan designed the basilica in Romanesque and Byzantine styles, neither of them Gothic and both unusual choices at the time. The building has four main towers, plus a bell tower that carries a gilded Virgin Mary statue. It has a crypt of Saint Joseph along with mosaics and stained glass, and it holds two churches stacked one above the other: a very ornate upper sanctuary and a much simpler lower one.
The basilica honors the Virgin Mary, who is credited with saving the city from the bubonic plague of 1643. Every year in early December, on December 8, Lyon marks this by lighting candles across the city in the Fête des Lumières, the Festival of Lights. Locals nickname the basilica "the upside-down elephant": the building resembles an elephant's body, with the four towers as its legs. It has a Museum of Sacred Art and is a symbol of the city.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 16 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 20 mm | 1:3,000 |

- Four slim spires with crosses
- Each of the four towers ends in a slim spire topped with a small cross. Print friendly adapts thin tips to the print scale, a layer height of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keeps them crisp, and printing slowly helps.
- Apse windows and roof ridges
- The rounded east end has a ring of slender window columns, and the long roof has fine ridges. A larger print size or Full detail keeps these details instead of smoothing them.
- One piece with the ground
- Basilique de Fourvière is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Basilique de Fourvière takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
