About Lyon
Lyon is a city in France at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers; Paris lies 391 km (243 mi) to its northwest. The city proper had 519,127 residents in 2023 within a municipal territory of 48 km², which makes it the third-largest city in France, and its metropolitan area had 2,338,789. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has its regional prefecture in Lyon. The Roman Senate ordered a settlement for Roman refugees in 43 BC, and it was built on Fourvière hill; increasingly called Lugdunum, it quickly became capital of the province of Gallia Lugdunensis. French rule over Lyon began only in the 14th century.
UNESCO has inscribed four parts of Lyon on its World Heritage List: the Presqu'île, Old Lyon, the Croix-Rousse slopes and Fourvière hill. During the Renaissance, the silk trade strengthened Lyon's ties to Italy, and Italian influence on its architecture is visible among historic buildings. The Bourse of 1749 resembled a public bazaar, with accounts settled in the open air. Revolutionary armies besieged the city for more than two months in 1793. Afterward, many buildings were destroyed, especially near the Place Bellecour, and a decade later Napoleon ordered every demolished building rebuilt.
