About the Block House, Governors Island
On Governors Island in New York Harbor, the brick Block House stands in Nolan Park's area. It is also known as Building 9, and as the Governors Island Post Hospital. Ulysses S. Grant was stationed there briefly, early in his military career, and the name comes from the building's early use as a prison.
Building 9 dates to 1839, designed in Greek Revival style, and first served as the Post Hospital. Its flat roof leaked, so a hip roof replaced it in 1864. A decade later, two patient-ward wings were added, as the original structure had poor ventilation. In 1878-1879 it became offices for the Department of the East and the Military Division of the Atlantic.
Various Army commands used it into the 20th century; by 1947 it had been turned into four sets of officers' quarters. Its two stories have a red-brick facade above a high schist basement. A wrought-iron balcony sits above the front entrance, and the windows are six-over-six with granite lintels and sills.
