About the BMW Headquarters

The BMW Headquarters, also called the BMW Tower and known in German as the BMW-Vierzylinder, or 'BMW four-cylinder', is a high-rise building in Munich, Germany, in the Am Riesenfeld area. Since 1973 it has served as the global headquarters of the German automaker BMW. The building has had protected historic status since 1999, and people often cite it as one of Munich's most notable examples of modern architecture. Extensive renovations ran from 2004 to 2006, and the tower also appears in the 1977 horror film Suspiria.

The tower went up between 1968 and 1972, finished ahead of the 1972 Summer Olympics, and was inaugurated on May 18, 1973. It stands 101 m (331 ft) tall, beside the Olympiapark and the company's main factory. Its exterior is meant to evoke four car-engine cylinders, with the Museum building as the cylinder head. Karl Schwanzer, an Austrian architect, designed both buildings.

Four vertical cylinders, side by side and facing each other, form the tower, and a horizontal molding in the facade divides each one at its center. The cylinders do not rest on the ground but hang from a central support tower; during construction, each floor was built at ground level and afterwards raised. The tower is 52.30 m (171.6 ft) in diameter, with 22 occupied floors, two of them basements and 18 used as offices. BMW Welt opened across the road on October 17, 2007.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 28 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 35 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 45 mm 1:2,344

Four joined cylinders
The tower is four round cylinders pressed together, with a thin groove at mid-height. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the curved walls smooth, and a larger print size keeps the floor lines readable.
A small pad on the roof
A small pad with four short round pieces sits on the roof. Printing slowly keeps these small details clean, and Print friendly adapts them to the print scale.
One piece with the ground
The BMW Headquarters is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The BMW Headquarters takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The BMW Headquarters is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a BMW Headquarters STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The BMW Headquarters grows with the print: about 28 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
