About Brihadisvara Temple
Brihadisvara Temple, in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India, is a Shaivite Hindu temple in a Chola architectural style, beside the Cauvery river on its southern bank. The Chola emperor Rajaraja I built it between 1003 and 1010 CE and named it Rajarajesvaram, literally 'Lord of Rajaraja'. Locally it is known as Thanjai Periya Kovil, the Thanjavur Big Temple. Together with the Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temples, it forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Great Living Chola Temples.
Built of granite, the vimana, the tower over the shrine, counts among the tallest in South India. It rises 63.4 m (208 ft). Chola architects and artisans developed the know-how to build at that scale in heavy stone. The complex is a rectangle close to two stacked squares, 240.79 m (790.0 ft) from east to west and 121.92 m (400.0 ft) from north to south. Its main sections are the sanctum with its tall tower, the Nandi hall at the front, a main community hall, a great gathering hall and a pavilion linking the great hall to the sanctum.
The temple faces east and was once surrounded by a water moat, which has been filled in. Inside the courtyard, the Nandi hall holds a monolithic seated bull that faces the sanctum. Carved from a single stone, it weighs about 25 tonnes, stands about 2 m high, and is 6 m long and 2.5 m wide. A pillared veranda, the prakara, circles the courtyard and measures about 450 m (1,480 ft) around, for walking around the shrine.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 18 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 22 mm | 1:3,000 |

- A tower of many small tiers
- The tall tower is built from stacked tiers with many small projecting details. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; Full detail keeps every tier, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
- A thin finial on the crown
- The tower ends in a small domed crown topped by a thin finial. Printing slowly with layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keeps the top crisp.
- One piece with the ground
- Brihadisvara Temple is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Brihadisvara Temple takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
About this model
Brihadisvara Temple is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.
Common questions
Is there a Brihadisvara Temple STL I can download?
Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.
How big can I print it?
Any print size from 40 mm across. Brihadisvara Temple grows with the print: about 18 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.
Is it free?
Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
