About the Church of the Intercession at Fili
Fili's Church of the Intercession is a Naryshkin Baroque church at 6 Novozavodskaya Street in Moscow, near Bolshaya Filyovskaya Street. The boyar Lev Naryshkin commissioned it on his suburban estate at Fili, an area that has belonged to the City of Moscow since 1935. It replaced a wooden church of 1619 established by Mikhail Romanov.
Construction ran from 1689 to 1694, and the building is shaped like a Greek cross, with short annexes that are rounded. In fact it holds two churches, one above the other: an Intercession Church for winter in the basement and, above it, an unheated summer church dedicated to the Saviour Not Made by Hands. A fire in 1712 destroyed all construction records, so the exact year of completion and the architect's name are unknown.
French troops damaged the church in 1812, and the Bolsheviks and World War II damaged it further. By 1945 it had lost its domes and crosses along with the upper octagonal layer. Exterior restoration took place in 1955-1971 and the interiors followed in 1971-1980; the church was painted pale red, though the original color scheme remains disputed.
