About El Tovar Hotel

Once a Harvey House hotel, El Tovar stands right at the canyon's south rim, within Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. The architect was Charles Whittlesey, who served as Chief Architect of Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. It opened in 1905 within a chain of hotels and restaurants that the Fred Harvey Company owned and ran with the Santa Fe railway. The railway's Grand Canyon Depot stood 100 meters (330 ft) away.

It was conceived as a destination resort, offering comfort and luxury 6.1 m (20 feet) from the canyon rim. It was among the first hotels of its kind in national parks, as railroads built big hotels in newly accessible scenic places. The name comes from Pedro de Tovar, who passed on rumors of a large river nearby; those rumors inspired the García López de Cárdenas expedition. President Theodore Roosevelt came back to stay in 1911 and again in 1913.

Its materials were local limestone and Oregon pine, and the lower portions are mostly log construction, giving way to lighter framed construction sheathed with planking on the upper levels, under a shingled roof. The hotel varies in height: its central portion has two stories, the north wing three and the south wing four, because the land slopes. The four-story lobby ends in a turret with a pyramidal roof. It is an early example of what became National Park Service Rustic architecture.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Dormers and a roofed turret
Small dormers line the roofs, and a pyramid-roofed turret rises over the lobby. Print friendly adapts these small features to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print.
A lodge on sloping ground
The model sits on sloping rim terrain. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm help keep the roof edges and window rows crisp at this small size.
One piece with the ground
El Tovar Hotel is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. El Tovar Hotel takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there an El Tovar Hotel STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. El Tovar Hotel grows with the print: about 8 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
