About Grand Canyon Village

Grand Canyon Village, a census-designated place in Coconino County, Arizona, stands on the canyon's South Rim inside Grand Canyon National Park. It focuses entirely on serving tourists who visit the canyon. The Santa Fe Railroad finished a line from Williams to the South Rim in 1901, the village traces back to it, and many of the structures in use date from that period. The 2020 census counted 1,784 residents. Las Vegas is 270 km (168 miles) away and Phoenix 290 km (180 miles) south, and the Grand Canyon Railway links the village depot with the one in Williams.

The National Park Service planned the village as a comprehensive tourism development, the biggest surviving example of Park Service town planning in the national park system. The El Tovar Hotel opened in 1905 and a train depot went up beside it in 1909. A 1924 master plan by landscape architect Daniel Ray Hull set a village square. Park Service housing had car access at the rear and house fronts facing a shared space, an early use of this layout in a planned community. The historic district, declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1987 and expanded in 1995, covers 247 buildings along with 55 landscape structures and three sites.
