About the Galata Tower

The Galata Tower, officially the Galata Tower Museum, is a Genoese tower from the Middle Ages standing in Galata, part of Istanbul's Beyoğlu district. It was raised as a lookout on the highest spot along the Walls of Galata, most of which have been demolished. The building houses an exhibition space and a museum, and it is a symbol of both Beyoğlu and Istanbul. Visitors mainly come for the 360-degree view of the city from its observation deck.

A Genoese colony was established in Galata in 1267, ringed by walls. The tower first went up at the highest point of those walls in 1348, when the colony was being expanded, under the name Christea Turris, or Tower of Christ, in Romanesque style. At that time, no building in the city stood taller. The Ottoman conquest of Constantinople came in 1453; the colony was abolished, and the tower was spared and made into a prison. From 1717 the Ottomans used it as a fire lookout.

Fires damaged the tower in 1794 and 1831. Its conical roof was taken down during the 19th century and rebuilt in restoration work carried out from 1965 to 1967, when the wooden interior was swapped for a concrete structure and the tower opened to the public. Excluding its top ornament, the nine-story tower measures 62.59 m (205.3 ft). The observation deck stands 51.65 m (169.5 ft) up, the base measures 16.45 m (54.0 ft) across on the outside, and the walls have a thickness of 3.75 m (12.3 ft).

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale

200 mm 24 mm 1:3,000

Slim finial and gallery railing
A narrow finial tops the conical roof and a fine railing rings the gallery below it. Print friendly adapts thin parts like these to your print scale; Full detail keeps them, best on a larger print.
Tall round shaft
The tower is a slender cylinder, so slow printing with good cooling keeps the upper section clean. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the curved wall and arched windows crisp.
One piece with the ground
The Galata Tower is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Galata Tower takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Galata Tower is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Galata Tower STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Galata Tower grows with the print: about 19 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
