About Istanbul

Istanbul is Turkey's largest city and its economic, cultural and historical center. It lies on the Bosphorus in northwestern Turkey, between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, and spans two continents, with roughly two-thirds of its people on the European side and the rest on the Asian side. The city covers 5,461 square kilometers, matching Istanbul Province. Greek colonists founded Byzantium in the seventh century BC. The city was reestablished as Constantinople in 330 AD and for nearly 16 centuries after that was the capital of four empires.

Istanbul is known mainly for Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, though its buildings also reflect other peoples who ruled the city. The Column of Constantine dates to 330 AD and marked the new Roman capital. Hagia Sophia has a dome 31 meters (102 ft) across and is described as the pinnacle of Byzantine architecture and held the title of largest cathedral in the world for over a thousand years. The Ottomans built towering mosques and ornate palaces, among them the Blue Mosque and Süleymaniye Mosque, raised in the 16th and 17th centuries. European styles later supplanted Ottoman architecture, as at Dolmabahçe Palace.
