About the Great Mosque of Touba

In Touba, Senegal, the Great Mosque of Touba is the city's largest building. It is home to the Mouride Brotherhood, a Sufi order, and so is important to that order, and the Grand Magal of Touba, a pilgrimage, takes place there. Ahmadou Bamba, who died in 1927, is interred inside it. With room for 7,000 worshipers, it ranked among Africa's largest mosques until the Massalikoul Djinane Mosque was built in 2019. The mosque was completed in 1963.

Plans for a great mosque at Touba took shape in the final years of Bamba's life, around 1924–27, and he chose the site for his tomb. In 1926 the French colonial rulers of Senegal agreed to the scheme after some hesitation. Construction was delayed after the first funds were misappropriated, and later it proceeded very slowly under his son and successor, Mamadu Mustafâ Mbacke. The foundations were finished in 1932, work paused from 1939 to 1947, and the mosque was inaugurated in 1963.

The mosque measures 100 m (330 ft) by 80 m (260 ft). Its structure includes seven minarets, three large domes, eleven additional domes and a pair of ablution chambers. The central minaret, 96 m (315 ft) tall, is also called Lamp Fall, a name given by the second Mouride caliph for Ibrahima Fall, who founded the Baye Fall community. Close by are the mausoleum of Bamba's sons, who were caliphs of the Mouride order, and a library of 160,000 volumes.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Slender minarets
The tall central minaret and several smaller minarets are thin. Print slowly with good cooling, and use 0.12–0.16 mm layers; Print friendly adapts the thinnest tips.
Many domes and arches
Rows of small domes cover the roofs, and arched arcades run along the sides. Full detail keeps them on a larger print, while Print friendly simplifies them for small prints.
One piece with the ground
The Great Mosque of Touba is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Great Mosque of Touba takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
