About the Jin Mao Tower

The Jin Mao Tower is a landmark skyscraper in the Lujiazui area of Pudong, Shanghai. Its Chinese name means "Golden Prosperity Building", and it is also known as the Jinmao Tower or Jinmao Building. The tower reaches 420.5 m (1,380 ft) with 88 stories, or 93 when the spire's floors are included. Inside are offices, a shopping mall and a Grand Hyatt Shanghai hotel that begins on floor 53 and was the world's highest hotel when the tower was finished. From the Bund, it joins the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center in the Lujiazui skyline.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, a Chicago firm, designed the tower. Its postmodern form echoes the tiered pagoda of traditional Chinese architecture, with gentle step-backs that set up a rhythm as it climbs. The number 8, linked with prosperity in Chinese culture, shapes its proportions, as it does for the Petronas Towers in Malaysia. The 88 floors are arranged in 16 segments, and the base is 16 stories tall. At the center is an octagonal concrete shear wall core, ringed by eight composite supercolumns and eight steel columns on the exterior.

Beneath it, 1,062 steel piles of high capacity reach down 83.5 m (274 ft). When it was built, no land-based building had used longer steel piles. Glass, stainless steel, aluminum and granite make up the curtain wall, which is crossed by latticework of aluminum alloy pipes. The tower was officially dedicated on August 28, 1998, a date picked with the number 8 in mind, and it was fully operational in 1999.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 113 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 141 mm 1:3,000

Slim spire at the top
A thin spire with small crown pieces tops the tower. Print friendly adapts these thin parts to the print scale; Full detail keeps them. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm and a slow print help the tip.
Many small stepped tiers
The tower steps in at many small tiers with fine horizontal ribs. A bigger print size keeps more of them, and printing slowly helps a tall, slim shape like this one.
One piece with the ground
The Jin Mao Tower is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Jin Mao Tower takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Jin Mao Tower is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Jin Mao Tower STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Jin Mao Tower grows with the print: about 113 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
