About Shanghai

Shanghai is one of China's direct-administered municipalities, ranking at the provincial level. It sits on the Yangtze's southern estuary, and the Huangpu River cuts through the city. Its urban area has 30,050,000 residents in 2026, making Shanghai the most populous city in China, and its port is the busiest for containers in the world. The city began as a fishing village and market town and rose to prominence in the 19th century through trade. After the First Opium War it was one of five treaty ports that had to open to European trade.

The Bund, on the bank of the Huangpu River, has a row of early 20th-century buildings that includes the neoclassical HSBC Building and the Art Deco Sassoon House. A construction boom in the 1920s and 1930s gave the city several Art Deco buildings, among them the Park Hotel, designed by László Hudec. Shikumen residences are typically gray brick houses of two or three stories, set along straight alleys called longtangs. Soviet neoclassical buildings such as the Shanghai Exhibition Center mostly date from 1949 to the late 1960s. The Oriental Pearl Tower rises 468 m (1,535 ft) at the northern tip of Lujiazui.
