About the Metropolitan Tower
Metropolitan Tower, a mixed-use skyscraper, rises at 146 West 57th Street, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. SLCE Architects designed it, Harry Macklowe developed it, and it was completed in 1987 after construction began in 1984. It is 218 m (716 ft) tall with 68 stories: an 18-story rectangular base crowned by a triangular tower of 48 stories, wrapped in a black-glass facade. When it was completed it was the tallest residential building in New York City, and also the tallest building in the city made of reinforced concrete.
The tower stands next to Carnegie Hall Tower, with only the Russian Tea Room, 6.1 m (20 ft) wide, between them. During the 1980s development of both buildings, the Tea Room's owner had refused to sell her land. A passageway between the 57th and 56th Street entrances forms part of 6½ Avenue. Office space of about 20,900 m2 (225,000 ft2) fills the base, and the upper stories hold 235 residential apartments. Several floor numbers are skipped because of the office stories' high ceilings, so the top floor is numbered 78.
The curtain wall has 7,200 panels holding 72,000 panes, assembled to look like an unbroken sheet of glass, and the black panes measure 1.5 by 2.7 m (5 by 9 ft). The tower section is a right triangle in plan, a shape that zoning restrictions on the site also required. Its superstructure is reinforced concrete, and it was built without special zoning provisions that would allow extra height.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 59 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 73 mm | 1:3,000 |

- Slender tower with an angled face
- The tower is tall and slender, with a narrow angled face. Printing slowly with good cooling helps tall thin shapes, and a bigger print size keeps more of the fine window lines.
- Window lines up the shaft
- Fine horizontal window lines run up the whole shaft. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep them crisp, and Print friendly adapts small surface details to the print scale.
- One piece with the ground
- The Metropolitan Tower is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Metropolitan Tower takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
About this model
The Metropolitan Tower is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.
Common questions
Is there a Metropolitan Tower STL I can download?
Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.
How big can I print it?
Any print size from 40 mm across. The Metropolitan Tower grows with the print: about 59 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.
Is it free?
Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
