  1. Dome and slender minaret

About the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, Edirnekapı

The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque in Istanbul's Edirnekapı neighborhood, close to the Byzantine land walls. Mihrimah Sultan, whose parents were Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan, commissioned it, and the chief imperial architect Mimar Sinan designed it. It stands on the Sixth Hill's summit, close to the city's highest point.

It is the larger of the two mosques commissioned by Mihrimah Sultan and named after her. There is no foundation inscription, but surviving manuscripts suggest construction began in 1563 and finished by 1570. Earthquakes have damaged the mosque several times: in 1719 some minaret stairs were destroyed, in 1766 the minaret and the main dome collapsed, and in 1894 the minaret fell onto the northwest corner of the mosque.

The main body is a cube. A half-sphere caps it, and each of its four sides has symmetrical tympana with many windows. Its dome measures 20 meters (66 feet) across and rises 37 meters (121 feet) high, and the minaret stands alone, tall and slender. Much of the wall surface is windows, so among Sinan's works it has one of the lightest interiors.
