About the Süleymaniye Mosque

The Süleymaniye Mosque is an Ottoman imperial mosque on the Third Hill of Istanbul. Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned it, and the imperial architect Mimar Sinan designed it. An inscription gives 1550 as the foundation date and 1557 as the inauguration date, but work on the complex likely went on for a few more years. It is the city's largest Ottoman-era mosque, and from the Third Hill it has an extensive view over the city around the Golden Horn. The mosque references the Hagia Sophia in its design and layout.

As with other Ottoman imperial foundations, the mosque sits within a larger külliye, a religious and charitable complex whose buildings included a hospital, a public kitchen and madrasas. Behind the qibla wall stands an enclosed cemetery with two octagonal mausoleums, one for Suleiman the Magnificent and one for his wife Hurrem Sultan, also called Roxelana. Selim II, Suleiman's son and successor, ordered his father's mausoleum built after his death, between 1566 and 1568. The old Ottoman palace, Eski Saray, stood on the site and had to be demolished.

A great fire in 1660 damaged the mosque, and Sultan Mehmed IV restored it; part of the dome later collapsed in the earthquake of 1766. In World War I its courtyard served as a weapons depot, and the mosque burned again when some ammunition ignited. The UNESCO listing called Historic Areas of Istanbul includes the mosque and its Associated Conservation Area as one of four components.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 21 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 27 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 34 mm 1:2,344

Four slender minarets
Four tall, thin minarets stand around the mosque. Slow printing and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep them crisp, and Print friendly adapts their thin tips to the print scale.
A cluster of domes
A large central dome is surrounded by many smaller ones. A larger print size and Full detail keep the dome ribs and the arcaded sides readable.
One piece with the ground
The Süleymaniye Mosque is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Süleymaniye Mosque takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Süleymaniye Mosque is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Common questions

Is there a Süleymaniye Mosque STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Süleymaniye Mosque grows with the print: about 21 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
