About Old Main (ASU)
Old Main, the oldest building at Arizona State University's Tempe campus, stands at 400 East Tyler Mall. W. A. McGinnis designed it in a Victorian Queen Anne style that shows Richardsonian Romanesque influences; it dates from 1898. With the Administration/Science Building and a third building that is gone, it formed the first quad of the Arizona Territorial Normal School, and Arizona gained statehood 14 years after the building's dedication.
Construction began in 1894, and the dedication came in February 1898. Theodore Roosevelt visited Arizona in 1911 to dedicate the Roosevelt Dam, and he gave a speech on the steps of Old Main. It was the Salt River Valley's largest building for decades. The National Register of Historic Places listed it in 1985, and restoration efforts began in 1990. The ASU Alumni Association led a campaign worth $5.7 million that refurbished the building to the period of its construction.
The brick building rises two and one-half stories. It has a full basement and sits on a granite base, and it measures 9.1 m × 41.1 m (30 × 135 ft). Its pressed-metal roof is hipped with projecting gables, and it has castellated cresting and metal ridge finials. A stairway of red sandstone leads to the entrance. The main facade, on the north side, faces University Drive and has two projecting gables. The windows of the upper level have circular arches on the north and segmented arches on the south.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 4 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 5 mm | 1:3,000 |
| 256 mm | 7 mm | 1:2,344 |

- Tiny roof finials
- A few small pointed finials stand on the roof ridges. Print friendly adapts such tiny tips to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print. Printing slowly helps small tips stay clean.
- Curved stair rails and arched windows
- A wide stair with curved side rails leads to the entrance, and rows of small arched windows line the walls. A layer height of 0.12 to 0.16 mm and a bigger print size keep these crisp.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Old Main (ASU) takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
About this model
Old Main (ASU) is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.
Common questions
Is there an Old Main (ASU) STL I can download?
Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.
How big can I print it?
Any print size from 40 mm across. Old Main (ASU) grows with the print: about 4 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.
Is it free?
Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
