About Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall, Las Vegas

Sam's Town, a hotel and locals casino, stands in Sunrise Manor, Nevada, east of Las Vegas, and is also called Sam's Town Las Vegas. Its name honors Sam Boyd, who was to run it with his son Bill. Built along the Boulder Strip, the site was attractive for its heavy vehicle traffic, yet its remote location at that time made gaming executives skeptical that it would succeed.

Ground was broken on September 6, 1978. The hotel section welcomed guests in early March 1979, with the casino following on March 22. The property had an Old West theme, with a decor that used Sam Boyd's preferred colors, red, black and gold. A three-floor hotel with 204 rooms wrapped around a swimming pool. The project cost $12 million, and a 56-lane bowling center joined it in 1981.

To make room for a nine-story tower with 646 rooms, which opened in 1994 in an expansion, the original hotel rooms were torn down. Its atrium holds Mystic Falls, an indoor park of 2,300 m² (25,000 sq ft) with trees, paths, streams, an artificial mountain and a waterfall. Since 1994 the park has offered a free laser and water show every night. In 2006, the Las Vegas-based band The Killers honored the property by titling an album Sam's Town.
